Applebee: Closer Look/Diana and Coronation Cup SAR 7.18.26
Happy Dunkin’ Diana Day!
Chad Brown has dominated the Diana like no other Grade I – winning nine of the past ten editions with only Charlie Appleby’s Athiqa in 2021 breaking up his run. Chad has four in the Diana today and they all look live.
Trivia Question: While Flavian Prat has piloted the last four winners of the Diana – which jockey has the most wins in this Grade I?
Race 5 – The Dunkin’ Diana Stakes – Grade I
One Mile and One Furlong on the Inner Turf for Fillies & Mares Four Years Old and Up
- Dynamic Pricing:Chad (1/4) Started 2026 in the Jenny Wiley where she got up for fourth (93 Beyer). Then in the Beaugay she was a decent second. In both races she did not show a strong turn of foot although she did level off late. She moves up if there is cut in the ground. Has been freshened since the Beaugay. Zayas takes over for Irad who is at the Haskell. Exotics.
- Cathedral:Her most recent start was at Royal Ascot in the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge where she was prominent but faded. Back in May in the Group 2 Dahlia Stakes at Newmarket she got to the front but couldn’t hold off a closer. Finished fourth in last year’s BC Filly and Mare Turf (101 Beyer). Has not won a race in almost two years. Mixed feelings.
- Kathynmarissa:Chad (2/4) American Pharoah mare started her year with a win in the Modesty Stakes where she came from the back of the pack (96 Beyer). In the New York she was wide and couldn’t catch her stable mate Portfolio Duration (95 Beyer). Has won all three starts at nine furlongs. Hits the board.
- Portfolio Duration:Chad (3/4) Two wins and a second in three starts this year. In the New York she took the field from gate to wire as she held off a late challenge (98 Beyer). That followed a narrow loss in the Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill (90 Beyer) where she was mid-pack. Franco is up for Prat who is at Monmouth for Haskell Day. Plenty of upside for this four year old filly who can win on the front end or come from a stalking position. The Pick.
- Five G:Cross entered at Monmouth in the Matchmaker Stakes. Broke her maiden on the grass in 2024 but then primarily ran on the dirt until she moved back to the turf in the state bred Mt. Vernon where she finished third where she was odds on (81 Beyer). Johnny V up. Passing.
- Segesta:Chad (4/4)Began her season in the Jenny Wiley where she was in a dead heat with Expensive Queen who caught her at the wire (96 Beyer). Then in the Just a Game she pressed the pace but couldn’t catch Classic Q who went gate to wire (96 Beyer). Dylan Davis gets the mount with Prat at Monmouth for Haskell Day. Should attend the pace. Dangerous.
- Ozara:Started her 2026 season with a win in the Miss Liberty at Monmouth via a pocket trip (90 Beyer). Then cut back to seven and half furlongs in the Royal North at Woodbine where she was fourth after she was pinched severely at the break (80 Beyer). Three for three over this track with wins in the De La Rose and Ballston Spa in 2025. Needs to improve to contend.

Race 8 – The Coronation Cup – Grade III
Five and One Half Furlongs on the Mellon Turf for Three Year Old Fillies
- Quiet Street:BillMott trained Godolphin filly started off as a promising two year old sprinter, but did not progress when she stretched out. In three starts this year the only result of note is a third in the Memories of Silver at the Big A where she went a mile on a yielding turf course (75 Beyer). This one moves up if we get a course with give in it. Exotics.
- Cy Fair:Quality turf sprinter for George Weaver has hit the board in all six startswith four wins including the BC Juvenile Turf Sprint last year (88 Beyer) and the Mamzelle in April (94 Beyer). She can win on the front end or stalking. The questions is will she be sent from this inside post or take back and stalk? Understandable favorite.
- Sapphire Beach:Preppedfor today with a win in an allowance race at Churchill (88 Beyer). Just missed in the Limestone Stakes two back where she looked the winner but hung and missed by a neck (91 Beyer). She can either press Cy Fair if that one is sent from her inside or go to the front herself. Lasix OFF. The Pick.
- Cadenza:Won the “Take the A Train” two back at the Big Awith a three wide move for her first stakes win (79 Beyer) and then in the Soaring Softly she sat a pocket trip but was no match for 3/5 Slay The Day (82 Beyer). Gets a piece.
- Hark Theangelssing:Comes in from Laurel where she won the Stormy Blues last month with a pace pressing trip (75 Beyer). In her only NY start she was good fourth in the Stewart Manor at the Big A where she made up a lot of ground on the rail but traffic impeded her run (73 Beyer). Needs to be faster.
- Snow Face Princess:Bought for $775kbut she has been out of form this year with ninth, fifth and seventh place finishes. Last year she won twice over this track including the Bolton Landing Stakes (83 Beyer) when she was in Pletcher’s barn. Hasn’t been close to that good with Asmussen. If she’s a “horse for the course” then she might be competitive at a price. Lasix OFF. Passing.
- Niche: (MTO):Twomost recent starts were wins on dirt in a MSW and a N1X race (78 Beyer). Live if this gets rained off.
- Hot Currency (MTO):Won the restricted Fourstar Cook Stakes at the Big A in April (84 Beyer) and then as a decent second in the state bred Bouwerie Stakes where she was leading late and was just caught in the last fifty yards (79 Beyer). The Pick on dirt.
