Weekend Derby prep thoughts

Have to assume we saw the Kentucky Derby favorite this past weekend when Journalism won the Santa Anita Derby to go back-to-back with triple-digit Beyers victories. Overcoming a tough trip for the win just adds to his appeal.

Rodriguez also scored a triple-digit Beyer winning the Wood Memorial at Aqueudct. If you like him heading to Louisville, his style will require a long look at what other speed will be likely to enter the starting gate.

The second-place finishers in both the Santa Anita Derby and the Wood also warrant attention.

Grande was making just his third career start and his stakes debut in the Wood for Pletcher/Repole. A good effort with a little bit of a run in the stretch. He should benefit from the race.

And Baeza probably needs some help to get into the Kentucky Derby points-wise, but he also ran well and is worth a look as a sibling to both Mage and Dornoch.
