Money Mike – What a Ride

On November 5, 2016 Hall of Fame Jockey Mike Smith had another “dream trip” from a Breeders’ Cup Champion.

Smith gave “Arrogate” a great ride just sitting off the pace of California Chrome turning for home and calculating exactly when to finish with a strong surge to win, his fourth, Breeders’ Cup Classic. Once again, “Money Mike” cashes in on a big stakes race! The year 2016 has been a magical ride for Hall of Fame Jockey Mike Smith as he has had many graded stakes wins at several different tracks.

For his career, Mike Smith holds the records for wins (23) and purse earnings over $30 million for the Breeders’ Cup Championships.  When it is time for money on the line, Mike Smith always shines! At the veteran age of 51 years old, Mike can still get it done and considers each ride as more quality over quantity. Mike is a fitness fanatic who understands the importance of keeping his body in excellent condition in order to keep riding effectively and competitively as most jockeys have youth on their side. But Mike has mastered his riding skills by being well prepared and thought out for each mount. To his amazing success, a selective approach seems to be working well for Mike Smith. As he has said many times when reaching the winners circle, the top quality horse certainly has helped in keeping him around. But as most horse racing fans know, successful jockeys work very hard on their craft with staying on top.

On Saturday, January 21st, 2017 the ECLIPSE AWARDS will be held at Gulfstream Park with a category of “Outstanding Jockey of the Year” award.

Mike Smith has won the award twice in his career and there is a very good chance of capturing his third.
